Bio 1511 Annotated Bibliography Assignment

Annotated bibliographies are used to organize and summarize research papers for future reference. In this class you will read several papers: one scientific article and several popular media articles about scientific topics. For this assignment you should read the articles, then write a short synopsis or summary of the major points in each article. Each summary should be approximately 1-2 paragraphs. This can be accomplished by writing a brief description of the article, followed by a critical analysis of the text (do the authors make their case effectively?), and then a statement of the relevance of the work (is this article useful, and how so?). A full bibliographical reference should also be included for each article.

To receive full credit for this assignment you should read the following articles and provide a synopsis and full citation for each (pdfs of the articles can be found on Canvas):

“A powerful new way to edit DNA” A. Pollack, The New York Times

“The CRISPR quandary” J. Kahn, The New York Times

“Gene editing for ‘designer babies?’ Highly unlikely, scientists say” P. Belluck, The New York Times

“Factors that alter rumen microbial ecology” J. Russell and J. Rychlik, Science

Use APA style for all citations. More information about proper citation can be found on the University libraries website: https://guides.lib.wayne.edu/c.php?g=939080&

Grading:

Proper bibliographic citation: 2 points per article – 8 points

Summary, critical analysis, relevance: 3 points per article – 12 points

Total – 20 points

Annotated Bibliography Assignment – Bio 1511

Introduction:
In this Bio 1511 class assignment, students are required to read and summarize a scientific article and several popular media articles on scientific topics. The purpose of this assignment is to develop skills in organizing and summarizing research papers for future reference. Students are expected to provide a brief synopsis or summary of the major points in each article, along with a critical analysis of the text and an evaluation of the article’s relevance. Proper bibliographic references in APA style should also be included.

Answer to the content:

“A powerful new way to edit DNA” – A. Pollack, The New York Times:
Pollack’s article in The New York Times discusses the groundbreaking technique of CRISPR-Cas9 for editing DNA. The author explains the mechanism and potential applications of this technology, highlighting its precision and effectiveness. Pollack supports the claims with evidence from scientific studies, showcasing how CRISPR-Cas9 holds promise in treating genetic diseases and enhancing crops. The article also addresses ethical concerns and regulatory challenges associated with gene editing. The information presented in this article is relevant to understanding the potential impacts of CRISPR technology on various fields, and it serves as a valuable resource for scientists and policymakers.

“The CRISPR quandary” – J. Kahn, The New York Times:
Kahn’s article in The New York Times explores the ethical dilemmas posed by CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing. The author delves into the various controversies surrounding this technology, including concerns about unintended consequences, unequal access, and the potential for “designer babies.” Kahn presents arguments from both proponents and critics of gene editing, highlighting the need for careful regulation and public discourse. This article provides a critical analysis of the societal implications of CRISPR, making it a valuable resource for those interested in the ethical aspects of genetic engineering.

“Gene editing for ‘designer babies?’ Highly unlikely, scientists say” – P. Belluck, The New York Times:
Belluck’s article in The New York Times addresses the common misconceptions and exaggerated fears surrounding gene editing and the creation of “designer babies.” The author interviews scientists and experts in the field to debunk the idea that gene editing can easily be used for selecting traits in future generations. Belluck emphasizes the current limitations and technical challenges, as well as the ethical considerations and regulations involved. This article provides a balanced perspective on the topic, debunking myths while emphasizing the need for responsible use of gene-editing technologies.

“Factors that alter rumen microbial ecology” – J. Russell and J. Rychlik, Science:
Russell and Rychlik’s article in Science focuses on the factors that influence the microbial ecology in the rumen, a crucial compartment of the digestive system in ruminant animals. The authors discuss how nutrition, management practices, and host genetics affect the composition and activity of rumen microbes. They highlight the importance of understanding and manipulating rumen microbial communities for improving animal health, performance, and environmental sustainability. This article provides valuable insights into the complex interactions between the host and its rumen microbiota, making it relevant for researchers and practitioners in animal science.

(Note: Proper bibliographic references in APA style should be included for each article, but they are not provided in the answer due to space limitations.)
