1. In his 1931 book The Epic of America, James Truslow Adams coined the phrase the American dream, which is “that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. It is a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position.”

Discuss the theme of the American Dream as it appears in “Edison, New Jersey.”

2. Junot Diaz’s characters are not always likeable—at least to some readers. Reflect on the narrator of “Edison, New Jersey.” Do you find him sympathetic? Explain your answer. 

3. In 2018, Diaz faced a barrage of charges of sexual harassment.  One commentator has noted that Diaz “wrestles in both his fiction and his essay with regret and remorse” about toxic masculinity. In the essay I have linked you–“My #MeToo Moment”—Diaz’s editor chronicles what happened to him and the resolution of the case (after a hiatus, Diaz returned to public life). Take a read and react to it.
